Pacific Lithium’s Ionomer Binders are based on a patented formulation developed to further improve the performance and stability of lithium-ion batteries – especially lithium polymer batteries. The unique properties of Pacific Lithium’s Ionomer Binders, based on LiAMPS polymer technology, inhibit swelling of electrodes and provide more robust and durable electrodes. This results in lithium-ion polymer batteries that have higher performance and longer life relative to batteries that use conventional (non-ionomer) polymers.

Enhanced adhesion between electrodes and current collectors.
Pacific Lithium’s proprietary ionomer polymer formulations improve adhesion and contact between the electrodes and the current collectors. This contact surface is a well known weak spot in lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries. Improved adhesion results in better power performance and longer battery life.

Enhanced cohesion of electrode components.
Pacific Lithium’s ionomer polymers also bind more strongly to the active materials and conductivity enhancers used in lithium-ion cathodes and anodes. This provides improved mechanical cohesion and contact between particles in the electrodes, which (again) results in higher electronic conductivity and better power performance. It also gives more durable, longer-lasting batteries that maintain their high performance for longer.

Reduced or eliminated swelling over time and at high temperatures.
One of the main contributing factors to failure and limited life of lithium-ion batteries, especially lithium polymer batteries, is that the conventional polymer binders used in the electrodes partially dissolve in the electrolyte solvents. This results in swelling of the electrodes and erosion of electrical contact – between the active particles in the electrode, and between the overall electrode structure and the current collector. The process is irreversible and gets worse with time, and is exacerbated by higher temperatures such as those to which many batteries are exposed in electronic equipment. Pacific Lithium’s LiAMPS polymer binders are almost completely insoluble in common electrolyte solvents, and do not swell – even at high temperatures. This gives better battery performance – for longer.
